excellent
Very early Italian edition of this fascinating crude woodcut map of the late 16th century, first issued in 1595 in Venice.
The map has a primitive depiction of Southeast Asia, the Philippines (FILIPINE, MINDENAO), the Moluccas (MALVCHE, GILOLO) and the undiscovered Southland (LVCACH). The mainland of Asia has the combination of knowledge from antiquity, from Medieval sources and from the 16th century discoveries of the Portuguese and Spanish explorers.
Early states are of the utmost rarity.
Strong and even impression of the woodblock. Thick and clean paper. Original colour, which is highly unusual for Rosaccio. A very desirable collector's example of a scarce early map of Asia.
