The map played an essential role in the 1980s in locating VOC ship 'Geldermalsen, that was shipwrecked on January 3, 1752 on Geldria's Droogte. The ship was on its way from Canton to Batavia fully loaded with porcelain and gold. The cargo was recovered by divers and auctioned in 1986 by Christie's in Amsterdam to fetch record prices.
