GENERAL Extremely early and inaccurate explorer's map of Brazil. The inland is virtually unknown. The Amazon and the Rio de Plata originate from a working Volcano deep in the jungle. Beyond that is TERRA NON DESCOPERTA.

There is more pictorial than geographical information. Along the coast, Portuguese and French visitors are seen together with local indians. The ocean is filled with French and Portuguese ships, with fish and with monsters. A splendid museum piece.

"In Giambattista Ramusio's not very accurate map of Brazil, 'Ponente', or the west, is at the top. Modern Rio de Janeiro is south of 'C. frio' (Cabo Frio), and Salvador or Bahia, at 'C. de todos Santos.' The map appeared in the third volume (published in Venice in 1556) of Ramusio's collection of explorer's narratives called 'Delle navigazione e viaggi'. Despite the charming but slightly misleading quality of the maps, Volume III of Ramusio is a prime source of information about American exploration."

(Tooley & Bricker).

"Highly pictorial woodcut map of Brazil based on Gastaldi. West is at the top, with the mouth of the Plata at the far left. The map's ethnological vignettes include an extremely early depiction of the hammock, for which the Brazilian Indians are famous, and the parrot. Hunting and domestic scenes abound, but Ramusio has spared the viewer the cannibal cliche already popularized on other maps."

(Suarez).
